Third case of ASF in China

In China, a third case of African swine fever (ASF) has become known. Yesterday, the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture reported that 88 pigs had died of ASF in the eastern Chinese city of Lianyungang. The highly contagious animal disease continues to spread in the country with the largest herd of pigs.
A total of 615 animals have been reported infected since 15 August in Lianyungang. All animal transports were banned there. All products and animals can transmit the disease very easily. There is no vaccine against the disease.
Emergency measures including culling and disinfection have brought the outbreak in Haizhou City under control, the ministry said.
The third case is located approximately 1,300 kilometers from the outbreak center of the first case south of Shenyang, which was reported on 3 August. The second eruption east of Zhengzhou is about 600 kilometers away. The animals here came from a live animal market in Heilongjiang Province in the northeast of the country. There, 8,000 animals have been culled to prevent the spread of the disease. In Zhengzhou, a slaughterhouse of the world's largest hog company WH-Group had to hunt 1,362 animals.
