The UK's wheat harvest this year rose to 13.99 million tonnes, a 44.8% increase over the previous season, the UK Department of Agriculture said today.
The estimate is slightly below the original forecast of 14.02 million tons published in October.
The increase was driven by more favorable cultivation conditions by an increase in area of 29.1% to 1.79 million hectares.
The average wheat yield increased by 12.2% to 7.8 tons per hectare.
Last season's wet weather during the fall wheat sowing window forced many farmers to switch to spring crops such as spring barley.
Rapeseed production decreased 5.5% to 981,000 tons, with a decrease in acreage partially offset by an increase in yields.
The estimate was slightly above an earlier forecast of 977,000 tons released in October.
The acreage fell by 19% to 307,000 hectares, well below the high of 756,000 hectares in 2012.
The average yield was 3.2 tons per hectare, compared to 2.7 tons in the previous season.
Problems controlling flea beetles following the banning of some widely used insecticides have contributed to the decline in area in recent years.
The ministry estimates the barley harvest at 6.96 million tons, a decrease of 14.2%.
