Ukrainian agricultural companies had sown 6.2 million hectares of winter wheat on November 11, that is almost 94% of the planned area of 6.66 million hectares, the Ministry of Agriculture announced this morning.
The winter grain sowing has practically stopped in the last few days and the farmers have only cultivated around 120,000 hectares since the beginning of November.
Winter wheat sowing plans were not met by two leading wheat-growing areas in Zaporizhia and Odessa, the ministry's data showed.
Weather forecasts said around a third of the planted area was affected by a lack of rain, while traders said farmers could also cut Ukraine's corn-sown area for 2022.
In autumn 2020, Ukraine reduced the area under cultivation for winter wheat from 6.7 million hectares in the previous year to 6.1 million hectares due to drought. However, a mild winter increased the harvest to 32 million tons in 2021, from 24.9 million in 2020.
