Ukraine could harvest another large grain crop in 2020 thanks to the favorable weather. The wintering losses are currently close to zero, Tetyana Adamenko from the state weather service told Reuters.
The area sown in Ukraine for the 2020 winter grain harvest rose by 0.2% to 7.6 million hectares. This includes 6.4 million hectares of winter wheat, 0.6% less than a year earlier.
Winter wheat dominates the wheat harvest in Ukraine and accounts for more than 95% of the country's wheat production.
Adamenko said that there are no longer any risks for Ukrainian plants and that the current mild weather, which is forecast for the near future, will help the plants start growing.
"The volume of moisture in the soil is less than a year ago, but it's still enough for plants to develop," said Adamenko.
Ukraine harvested a record 75.1 million tons of grain in 2019 compared to 70 million tons in 2018. The wheat harvest was 28.1 million tons compared to 24.6 million tons in 2018.
