Night frost in the northern and central regions of Ukraine could lead to damage to winter crops in the snow-free areas, reports the analyst APK-Inform on Tuesday. The night temperature dropped to around 5 degrees Celsius below zero on Monday and Tuesday, and weather forecasts predict at least one more frosty night. Ukraine, which has already started sowing summer cereals in 2020, has sown winter cereals on an area of 7.6 million hectares. This includes 6.4 million hectares of winter wheat, 0.6% less than a year earlier. Winter wheat dominates the wheat harvest in Ukraine and accounts for more than 95 percent of the country's wheat production. The deputy minister of agriculture told Reuters this month that the grain harvest in Ukraine could drop this year from 75 million tons (2019) to around 65 million tons as the area sown is smaller. The 2020 wheat harvest could drop from 28 million tons (2019) to around 23 million tons.
