Ukraine has enough wheat to meet its domestic food needs and there is no need to curtail exports, Ukrainian grain traders association UGA said Thursday.
Big global grain producer Ukraine is considering capping milling wheat exports in the first half of 2022, with officials expected to decide on the issue in mid-January, two sources familiar with the discussions told Reuters this week.
Ukraine has exported 15.6 million tons of wheat so far in the 2021/22 season (July-June), 27% more than in the previous year.
According to the sources, the country was able to supply around 10 million tons more wheat by the end of the season, including up to 4 million tons of milling wheat and 6 million tons of feed wheat.
"There is no reason for possible restrictions on wheat exports," UGA said in a statement.
Export restrictions would make it impossible for farmers to sell the harvest, which could lead to a reduction in the area sown.
Ukraine traditionally reduces wheat deliveries in the second half of the season, it said.
Ukraine harvested 32.4 million tons of wheat this year, and according to a memorandum between the government and traders, exports were not allowed to exceed 25.3 million tons for the entire 2021/22 season.
