The state-owned Ukrainian grain company DPZKU has around 100,000 tons of wheat in stock and is ready to meet domestic flour needs as demand has risen sharply due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Ukrainian bakers and millers last week asked the government to limit the export of grain and related products to support bread prices in the event of the spread of the corona virus.
The Ministry of Economy said it would control wheat export deliveries, sell flour on the domestic market, and agree a maximum wheat volume for export with traders.
The state company's wheat stocks make up more than 100,000 tons. If required, it can be used to produce flour for the domestic market in Ukraine, the company said. The company can produce 1,000 tons of flour a day.
Although Ukraine is a major grain exporter and its harvest far exceeds domestic consumption, the coronavirus pandemic has prompted some countries to consider export restrictions.
The Ukrainian UGA union said this week that it agreed to a proposal from the Ministry of Economic Affairs to limit wheat exports to 20.2 million tons in the 2019/20 season to avoid an increase in domestic bread prices.
Ukraine has already exported around 18 million tons of wheat this season.
