The most important cereal growing region in Ukraine, Odessa, has lost around 500,000 hectares of winter crops due to the persistent severe drought. The harvest there could be almost 70% smaller, a senior regional official said on Thursday.
About 3.7 million tons were harvested there last year, and the forecast for this year is 1.2 million tons, "wrote Governor Maksym Kutsyi on his Facebook page.
Ukraine, the fourth largest wheat exporter in the world, harvested a record 75 million tons of grain in 2019.
The Department of Commerce said last month that the 2020 grain harvest could drop sharply to 60 million tons. On Wednesday, the forecast after rainfall in most regions was raised to 65 to 68 million.
