Ukraine: Hot and dry weather weighs corn yields

Hot and dry weather in most regions of Ukraine is depressing corn yields and could have a negative impact on winter cereal crop rotation, according to agricultural consultancy UkrAgroConsult. The summer crop has already ended in Ukraine and the maize harvest is expected to start in the coming weeks. At the beginning of the month, the company increased the forecast for the corn harvest in 2018 to a record 28.5 million tonnes. Previously, 27.3 million tonnes were still expected. Average yields were raised from 6.00 tonnes / hectare to 6.26 tonnes / hectare at the beginning of the month. Meanwhile, it is expected but again with lower yields. High air temperatures could cause a decline in yields, especially on late sown areas.
Ukraine is one of the world's largest exporters of corn, wheat and barley and plans to harvest at least 60 million tonnes of grain this year.
