Ukraine maize exports fall by 3% due to drought

The agricultural consulting company APK-Inform lowered its forecast for the 2020 corn harvest in Ukraine by 8% to 35.1 million tons due to the unfavorable weather.
With a lower harvest, Ukraine would export 28.5 million tons of maize in the 2020/21 season, a decrease of 3% compared to 2019/20.
"The main factor is the drought that hit most of the country in August and is particularly pronounced in the central regions, where the main areas under corn are concentrated," APK-Inform said in a report.
The consultancy forecast that corn yield could drop from 7.19 tons per hectare in 2020 to 6.71 tons per hectare in 2019.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Economy announced on Monday that the corn harvest in 2020 was 33 million tons and exports were 26 million tons in 2020/21.
The ministry said the total grain harvest is 68 million tons and 47.4 million could be exported this season.
Ukraine harvested a record 75 million tons of grain in 2019 and sold 56.5 million tons of grain abroad.
