In northern Indonesia in North Sumatra, 30,000 pigs had died of African swine fever (ASF) by December 15. The economic losses amount to several million US dollars. The authorities are attempting to isolate the affected areas through quarantine measures.
The local Ministry of Agriculture officially declared the outbreak of the highly contagious disease. Everything possible is being done to limit the spread. ASF has been detected in 16 regions so far. Including in the provincial capital. A strict transport ban is in place.
Around 1.2 million pigs are kept in North Sumatra.
Several ASF outbreaks have also been reported in East Timor.
A year ago, China was also affected by the disease; since then, the pig population there has halved and meat prices have risen sharply both there and worldwide as a result.
