In the first eleven months of 2019, Vietnam more than doubled its imports of pork to 110,000 tons. This was announced yesterday by the Ministry of Agriculture in Hanoi. The national pig herd has been hit by African Swine Flu (ASF).
Since the first report of an ASF infection in February 2019, the disease has now been found in all 63 provinces of the country. More than six million pigs, or 20% of the total pig population, had to be culled or died from the disease. The price of pork has almost tripled, which is driving up inflation.
Vietnam will continue to import pork and promote national meat production in the meantime. We cannot afford a supply shortage, said a government spokesman.
