1. supply situation & harvest progress
Harvesting work is progressing according to plan in almost all growing regions in Germany. The dry, cool autumnal weather of the past few days has created favorable conditions for the main harvest in many places. In many regions, the harvest has already been completed or is about to be completed.
Yields are still described as good to very good - both in terms of quantity and quality. However, individual batches are affected by quality losses due to wet periods or storage pressure, which leads to increased sorting and selection efforts. Surplus or non-marketable goods are increasingly being sold to biogas plants or for feed utilization.
2. prices & development of demand
-
The REKA quotation for ware potatoes has remained stable this week after having been lowered several times previously. In NRW, it most recently stood at €16.00/100 kg, which is regarded as the lower price limit in many places.
-
Wholesale prices varied from region to region: while they fell slightly in some southern German regions, they remained stable in northern Germany.
-
Consumer demand is generally calm, even if the cooler weather has led to slightly higher demand in some areas (e.g. soup potatoes, floury types).
-
Food retailers continue to offer low-priced promotional goods and special packs, but this only partially relieves stock levels.
3. industrial produce & export markets
The market for industrial potatoes remains extremely subdued.
-
The processing industry prefers to work with contracted goods.
-
There is hardly any demand for free quantities; quotations remain suspended or show no trend.
-
Demand also remains limited on the export markets. Supply is also very high, particularly in neighboring markets such as France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
ZMP Live Expert Opinion
In the coming weeks, market activity is likely to depend heavily on the storability of harvested produce and seasonal sales opportunities. Prices for edible produce appear to have bottomed out, but a sustainable recovery is not in sight as long as industrial produce and exports do not provide any impetus. The coming weeks will be decisive for storage and quality preservation - this is where it will be decided who can successfully market their produce later on.
