The persistently stable fine weather conditions are allowing a rapid start to the main harvest in large parts of Germany. On most farms, this should begin in the coming week at the latest. Yield expectations are positive across the board - but this is precisely what worries many producers. This is because the early potato harvest was already above average, while demand currently remains weak. As a result, producer prices have come under noticeable pressure and have reached a very low level. Supply clearly exceeds demand, so there is no relief in sight in the short term.
The switch from early potatoes to ware potatoes has been completed. The supply is extensive, with the varieties Annabelle and Berber from domestic production in particular available across the board. Demand developed unevenly: while the friendly weather provided a boost, the summer vacations led to a noticeable reluctance to buy in some regions.
Retailers are also trying to take countermeasures and are increasingly relying on advertising and special offers to stimulate sales.
Quotations on the market for industrial potatoes were recently suspended in Western Europe, citing a lack of sales and market transactions.
ZMP Live Expert Opinion
The stable weather has enabled a smooth start to the main harvest, but the high supply is meeting with weak demand and putting further pressure on producer prices. Despite individual stimuli from food retail promotions and friendly weather, the bearish market factors currently predominate, particularly in the industrial potato sector. At €16/100 kg, a temporary price floor may have been reached for table potatoes, but if demand remains subdued, there is a risk of further pressure.
