The early varieties of table potatoes are currently growing well. Producers are satisfied in almost all regions, even if the soils are too dry, particularly in eastern Germany. In particular, the May weather so far has favored tuber growth, while rainfall in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia has also ensured good soil moisture. However, it will probably be a few more days before the first potatoes emerge from the ground thanks to ripening promotion. Imported goods are still on the shelves of food retailers, and it will be a while before German goods reappear across the board. The warehouses have largely been cleared, with only very few batches still being traded.
The prices of raw materials for chips continue to rise. Belgapom increases by a significant 5 euros, and Reka has also adjusted its prices again. In the Netherlands, prices in Cat. 1 are quoted at between 40 and 50 euros/dt. In Belgium in particular, demand for processing potatoes remains high. Attempts are being made to mobilize the last stocks. However, it is clear that demand and requirements are significantly higher than supply. Rumour has it that prices of up to 50 euros per tonne are being paid to mobilize the last of the tubers. Farmers everywhere are still busy planting the main harvest. The availability of seed continues to be a problem. In many cases, growers are cutting the seed potatoes, and where work has had to be interrupted, these tubers are causing problems with rotting and drying out.
