The potato harvest is now in full swing in Germany at the height of summer. While the harvest of the early potatoes is largely complete, the transition to the harvest of the subsequent varieties is seamless. Some crops are showing early signs of weather and pest-related stress. Compared to normal years, a lead of around one week in ripening is expected.
In northern Germany, the vacation season ensures a steady demand from consumers. Nevertheless, the large quantities of potatoes ready for harvest are putting pressure on prices throughout the country. Hopes are now pinned on a revival in demand due to the end of the vacation season in some federal states.
Domestic offers are currently dominating the market. Although their availability was slightly limited, demand was still easily met. Some traders lowered their prices slightly to improve storage capacity, but not always successfully.
The Cypriot batches have disappeared from the market, while the season for Italian batches is coming to an end. There have been no significant price changes so far.
