There was no change in prices on the potato market at the weekend. Little has changed on the processing market. The factories have not yet increased their demand again, and farmers are generally showing little willingness to sell. In Belgium, prices are unchanged today, while prices in the Netherlands were lowered slightly at the beginning of this week. In France, quotations have remained unchanged for weeks at 35 euros/dt for Fontane. The factories here buy free goods when they are offered. The growing conditions for current and existing plantings remain difficult, especially in Belgium and parts of France, where the soil is often not yet dry enough. In Germany, but also in the more southerly growing areas in France, the situation has improved slightly in some regions.
Prices on the food market are largely unchanged. The asparagus season has not yet really taken off and is therefore not providing any impetus. Warehouses continue to be cleared on an ongoing basis. In France, too, there are reports of a brisk clearing of potato stores. The first loose-skinned early potatoes have now been salvaged here. In Belgium, large parts of the ware potatoes appear to have already been cleared. In particular, there are hardly any waxy varieties left. Food retailers there are therefore likely to stock their shelves with early potatoes from Cyprus from next week.
ZMP Live Expert Opinion
The signs are very reminiscent of the previous year. Potato planting is not really getting off the ground. Stocks are slowly dwindling, mainly because last year's harvest was smaller. However, market participants seem to be prepared for this and have taken precautions. The potato market continues to make a steady impression.
