"As corporations under public law, the chambers of agriculture occupy an intermediate position between state bodies and professional organizations. On the one hand, they fulfill sovereign administrative tasks on behalf of the federal states, such as the implementation of support measures or participation in landscape planning. On the other hand, they also act as agricultural self-governing institutions - for example in the areas of advice or vocational training.
After the Second World War, chambers of agriculture (Schleswig-Holstein, Rhineland-Palatinate, Bremen, Saarland, North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony) or institutions similar to chambers (Hamburg, Berlin) were re-established in most of the federal states, based on the corresponding pre-war institutions.
In southern Germany (Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg) this was dispensed with, and in Hesse it was even dissolved after some time. No chambers of agriculture have been established in the new federal states either. "
