"The concept of sustainability describes a vision of how regenerative systems should be used. Management is sustainable if the system retains its essential characteristics. A classic example is forestry. It is sustainable if only as much wood is used as can grow back as a result of the stock build-up. Today, the term sustainability is understood more broadly internationally. Three criteria must be met simultaneously:
Ecological sustainability requires the preservation of nature and the environment.
Economic sustainability describes concepts for viable value creation.
Social sustainability pursues the idea of social justice: sustainability criteria are becoming increasingly relevant in agriculture. Specific regulations for biomass have been in force in the EU since the 2010 harvest. It is to be expected that such requirements will be further developed for all agricultural production in the coming years."
