End of February 2024: EU COM slightly corrects EU grain balance As of February 29, 2024, the EU Commission (EU COM) updated its monthly grain balance. The corrections are on a small scale. EU grain production is estimated at 269.8 million t (previous year 266.7 million t). This includes wheat production of 132.6 million t. The corn harvest is estimated at 62.3 million t. Barley only reaches 47.5 million tonnes. Domestic consumption is estimated at 257.3 million t (previous year 255.4 million t). The use for human nutrition remains largely unchanged at just under 60 million t, while feed consumption increases slightly to 156.85 million t. The use of grain for the purpose of producing bioethanol increases by 1 million t to 12.1 million t. The EU remains a net export region. Exports fell from last year's 47.9 to this year's 45.9 million t. Wheat exports are particularly affected by this, with a decline from 33.5 to 31.5 million t. EU grain imports fall by around 25% to 30 million tonnes. There are 17.5 million in it. t of corn and 10.5 million t of wheat. EU stocks have fallen from 50.8 million tonnes last year to 47.3 million tonnes and are therefore still in the upper range of recent years.
