MARS: EU crop yields averaged over 5 years - large regional differences The Agricultural Meteorological Institute of the EU Commission (MARS) has calculated on the basis of climate data in the period from 01.Aug. until 10 Sep 2019 updated the previous yield forecasts. The average yield for all cereals is estimated at 5.53 t / ha , which is only slightly below the 5-year average and almost 1% lower than in the previous month. According to the investigations, this year's wheat yields are expected to be 1.9% above the 5-year average, with durum wheat performing even better, at + 3.9% . In the individual regions, however, the range is from -9.4% in Spain to +7.3% in Bulgaria and Romania, in each case compared to the 5-year average. For Germany, a -1.5% lower wheat yield is estimated. In the case of wheat, it was crucial whether or not sufficient precipitation or soil water was present during the period of grain filling .Winter barley weathered the weather better with +3.8% . Earlier maturity compared to wheat has been the main advantage. By contrast, the late- summer barley shrank far less sharply at -1.6% . Bulgaria (+ 11%) and Romania (+ 12%) are the front runners this year. Decisive were sufficient rainfall and favorable temperatures. Spain, on the other hand, has been badly hurt at 10% . Poland also performed worse, at -4.2%. The rainfall in these regions was just too close. The German result for barley yield is almost exactly the 5-year average. The yields of rye and triticale are just below or above the 5-year average in the EU average. Apart from two deviations, the range of rye / triticale yields is comparatively low. Spain is the exception in negative terms with -16% and Great Britain with + 34% (!) Each in a multi-year comparison.In contrast to the previous month's estimate, maize maize is only classified on a 5-year average. The eye result was still in the positive range of +4%. At the same time, Romania should achieve a peak result of +42% for years. The Bulgarian corn yield should be +17% better than the 5-year average. Striking is also Hungary with an increase of +12%. By contrast, a corn yield of -7.8% in a five-year comparison is predicted for Germany . In France and Italy , each with -13% and Poland with -18% , the expectations look comparatively gloomy. This year's EU harvest is a reflection of this year's regional weather conditions with too little precipitation in the northern center of the EU and high rainfall in the southeast of the area .
