Dec.-2023 FAO: global grain supply slightly higher than previous month In its latest Dec. 2023 edition, the United Nations Agriculture and Food Organization (FAO) slightly increases world grain production to 2,823 million t including rice. The slightly higher global wheat harvest contributes to this, while slight reductions are made in feed grain. Compared to last year with a harvest of 2,797 million tonnes, this year's harvest is significantly better. Grain consumption is estimated at 2,813 million tons. In the previous year, 2,782.5 million tons were consumed. The calculated final stocks increase from last year's 863 to this year's 886 million t. The supply figure is calculated at 30.8% of the final stock of consumption and thus remains in the multi-year average range. In the wheat market, falling production of 787 million t (previous year 804 million t) is offset by increasing consumption of 791 million t (previous year 778 million t). Inventories will therefore be reduced slightly, but will still remain in the middle range.For feed grain , with a focus on corn , production increased to 1.511 million t (previous year 1,472 million t). Global consumption is estimated at just under 1,500 million t (previous year: 1,482 million t). After the weak previous year, the final stocks should reach the level of the year 202/22. There are few changes in the rice market; the supply situation is improving slightly. The sowing conditions for winter cereals have progressed quickly, mainly due to favorable weather conditions; Difficulties have only arisen in parts of Europe. Similar favorable conditions can be found in the southern hemisphere. Cultivated areas have tended to increase.
