(AMI) - Changes are not just happening globally. The home market is also changing. In particular, the forthcoming Brexit represents a major turning point for the Community as a whole and also for Germany. The United Kingdom is a significant milk producer by volume in the EU and a major importer of dairy products, mostly from other Member States of the Community. The British are also an important trading partner for Germany, with the German foreign trade statistics for dairy products showing a clear overhang in favor of exports. On average over the past five years, Germany has delivered milk products worth almost € 500 million a year to the United Kingdom, while British goods worth around € 90 million have been sold in Germany. Notable proportions in the export of German producers to the island were seen in cheese, mainly in the categories fresh and processed cheese, as well as yoghurt and sour milk products and mixed milk drinks. Against this background, an orderly market access is sought after the withdrawal.Because, depending on the design of Brexit, serious financial losses may arise for the German and European dairy industry. This is especially the case in the worst case scenario of an unregulated exit the case. This had signed off on 12.04.19, after the withdrawal contract had been repeatedly rejected by the British House of Commons. However, a "hard Brexit" has been averted for the time being by the recent postponement of the exit to 31.10.19 at the Special Summit of Heads of State and Government in Brussels. It is to be hoped that, until then, an acceptance of the withdrawal agreement by the British House of Commons, and thus at the latest in the autumn, will lead to a regular exit from the EU from the EU. If the withdrawal contract is accepted earlier, an appointment before 31.10.19 is conceivable.
ZMP Live Expert Opinion
A "hard Brexit" is averted for the time being. Thus, the uncertainty potential on the milk market has initially again become much smaller. It is to be hoped that by the end of October, an acceptance of the withdrawal agreement by the British House of Commons will take place and thus it comes at the latest in the fall to a regular leaving the UK from the EU.
