The United Kingdom is a significant milk producer by volume in the EU and a major importer of dairy products, mostly from other Member States of the Community. The British are also an important trading partner for Germany, with the German foreign trade statistics for dairy products showing a clear overhang in favor of exports. On average over the past five years, Germany has delivered milk products worth almost € 500 million a year to the United Kingdom, while British goods worth around € 90 million have been sold in Germany. Notable proportions in the export of German producers to the island were seen in cheese, mainly in the categories fresh and processed cheese, as well as yoghurt and sour milk products and mixed milk drinks. Against this background, an orderly market access is sought after the withdrawal.Because, depending on the design of Brexit, serious financial losses may arise for the German and European dairy industry.
