(AMI) - Since March of this year, milk deliveries have been above the previous year's level. This development continued and intensified gradually from month to month. The significant increase is likely to be mainly due to higher milk producer prices. According to AMI estimates, milk deliveries in the EU-28 were 3.6% higher in September than in the same month last year. In total, 12.5 million t of raw materials were delivered. Only six of the 28 Member States produced less milk in September than the year before. Among them were Sweden, Hungary and Croatia. Since these were mainly small quantities of milk producer countries, the plus ultimately outweighed very clearly. Above all, the surplus volumes from Germany (+ 3.1%) and France (+ 3.6%) made a total impact. As in the previous months, more milk was delivered in Ireland, with an increase of around 10%, than in the previous year. A turnaround was now also noticeable in the Netherlands. Here, the dairy farms have delivered less milk in recent months, which may be due to the phosphate reduction program, among other things. However, the dairies recently recorded slightly more milk than in the same month last year. In the first three quarters, milk deliveries in the EU, at 0.8%, were just above the previous year's level. As the increase in milk producer prices is expected to continue until the end of the year, this should also further boost production. If production growth remains at this level, the EU could gain between 1.0 and 1.5% at the end of the year. Milk production has also stabilized or is already above the previous year's level in many parts of the world. In 2017, this had an impact on world market supply, which was tied to the production of large-volume exporters EU, USA, New Zealand and Australia. As a result of the recovery in producer prices and the more favorable weather conditions at the beginning of the year, from March onwards, the export offer for the first time since May 2016 broke the previous year's line again. Since then, the quantities are more extensive than twelve months earlier. For the period from January to September, this resulted in a volume advantage of 2.4 million tonnes or 1.1% compared to the same period of the previous year.
ZMP Live Expert Opinion
The trend towards more milk continued in September almost across the EU. The increase compared to the previous year continues to increase, as more raw materials are now being collected by the dairies in the large milk producer countries than before.
