(AMI) - The export of milk products from the EU developed inconsistently in the first half of 2017. The increase in the exports of skimmed milk powder was particularly high. Butter, on the other hand, is scarce in the European Community and is strongly in demand on the domestic market. Trade with third countries declined sharply, although the backlog decreased compared to the previous year. EU milk powder exports on the rise, exports of skimmed milk powder from the EU have increased by approximately 35% compared to the same period in the first half of the 2017th The trend from the previous months was thus strengthened. However, exports have declined significantly in the same period of 2016, which puts the high growth in the current year down. In total, the Community exported 420,000 tonnes in the first half of 2017, equivalent to a quarter of the year's production. This meant that the Community continued to be the most significant exporter. The largest customers of goods from the EU were Algeria and China. Magermilk powder was supplied mainly from Germany, followed by France and Belgium.
Butter exports go back almost everywhere
Both the largest exporter in New Zealand and the EU and other countries decreased the quantities exported from January to June 2017. The EU produced around 101,000 tonnes of butter. This was 19% less than in the same period of the previous year. The high domestic demand combined with a milk supply, which was still slightly below the previous year's figure, significantly reduced the Community's export offer.
ZMP Live Expert Opinion
The supply of butter is scarce and has had an impact on the exports of the world's largest exporters in the first half of 2017. In the case of skimmed-milk powder, however, the high supply in the EU boosted exports.
