Hot and dry summer weather in the southern Canadian prairies will probably severely limit the wheat harvest of the country. The Canola (rapeseed) harvest is more robust against the weather risks, according to the results of a Reuters survey among 17 traders and analysts before the Canadian grain harvest.
The total wheat harvest in Canada will thus be 17% smaller at 26.2 million tonnes than in the previous year. This would be the smallest harvest in six years. The Canola crop, on the other hand, is likely to be 1% larger than in the previous year and reach the record volume of 18.6 million tonnes.
Statistics Canada, the state statistical office, will publish its harvest on 31 August, based on a survey among the farmers.
The Canadian Prairie had to cope with very different weather this year. This went from too much rain in parts of Alberta and Saskatchewan to an advantageous combination of heat and timely rain in other regions of the North American country.
