EU-COM short-term outlook for pork market 2024: easy reconstruction In its latest forecast for 2024, the EU Commission (EU-COM) expects a slight reconstruction of EU pork production to around 21, following the sharp declines of the two previous years .2 million t. However, the result remains far behind the 2021 peak of 23.66 million t. EU domestic consumption is also expected to increase slightly to around 3.5 million t in 2024 (previous year: 3.3 million t). Per capita consumption is calculated at 30.6 kg. The highest consumption so far was in 2020 with 4.94 million t or 34.5 kg. The level of self-sufficiency in the EU-27 falls from 126.1% (2020) to 119.5% in 2024. Pork exports are estimated to be higher again at around 3.5 million t (2024), but are far from reaching the record result of 2020 with 4.94 million t, the peak of China imports. With Brexit and the ASF outbreak in Germany , exports to third countries have changed significantly.Despite a significant reduction, China still remains the largest destination for EU exports. But Great Britain is already behind this and the trend is increasing. The largest deliveries there come from Denmark (26%), Germany (23%), Holland 10, 5%) Belgium (10.5%) and France (7%) as well as Ireland with 5.4%. Among the global importing countries , Japan and South Korea are particularly important. The rest is spread across many small importing countries. The largest EU third country exporter is Spain with a share of over 31%. Denmark and the Netherlands fall to 17% and 16.5% respectively. Germany only achieves 7.5%.
