German piglet imports

German piglet imports dropped significantly in 2020. Germany's piglet imports from Denmark and the Netherlands have ranged between 10.5 and 11.5 million animals in recent years. In the final months of 2020, imports fell sharply. The main reason was the backlog of slaughter pigs in connection with an abrupt fall in prices. German pig farmers held back with the piglet stalls. Denmark's deliveries to Germany fell by 802,000 piglets over the course of 2020. In total, DK exported 1.6 million fewer piglets. The weekly imports from Holland fell from an average of 80,000 per week to less than 70,000 animals. The decline can still be observed today. However, the total exports of Holland have not decreased. Piglets not weaned in Germany were mainly shipped to Spain. The declining German piglet imports in the previous months led to a reduction in the supply of fattening pigs around 4 months later. This can already be observed now and will continue for the coming weeks and months.
