DRV: final harvest estimate - surprisingly high maize harvest In its final harvest estimate, the German Raiffeisen Association (DRV) corrected the result to 42.28 million t. The latest surveys on the K. maize harvest have been incorporated into this. The total harvest is rated -2.3% lower than in the previous year and is more in the lower midfield compared to previous years. With only a slightly reduced cultivation area , the reduced area yield of -2.1% is primarily responsible for the result. With 21.5 million tonnes , wheat production represents the largest share of the harvest. Despite the expansion of the area by + 4%, the quantities are -2.5% below the previous year's level. The reason for this is the weak yield with a decrease of -6.3%. The grain formation left a lot to be desired. With a slightly reduced cultivation area, the rye harvest was also -4.8% worse due to yield.The total barley area was reduced by -7.9% this year; Spring barley made a decisive contribution to this with a cultivation reduction of -17.6%. Yields, which were + 4.6% higher than in the previous year, could not compensate for the decline in area, so that the harvest volume was down by -3.6% to 10.45 million t . Despite lower revenues (-5.8%), the oat harvest was due to the increased by 12.8% acreage by + 6.2% higher than last year. The K. maize harvest is estimated to be unexpectedly high at 4.2 million t (+ 5.0%). The main reason is the area yield of around 100 dt / ha . In view of the unfavorable weather in the early growth phase one had to be skeptical. However, this year the maize is harvested with a high level of grain moisture, so that high energy prices result in considerable drying costs.Overall, the 2021 harvest is sufficient to cover the domestic demand on average. However, there are differences between the individual types of grain. There is a need to import quality wheat, brewing barley, oats and maize, while feed grain is sufficient. But the restricted transport leads to bottlenecks for the regional balance between surplus and deficit areas. High energy costs also contribute to this.
