First evaluation of the May 2023 livestock census results The preliminary evaluation of the pig census of May 03, 2023 provides a reduction in the total pig population of -3.1%, which has continued for several years, compared to the census in November 2022. Compared to the date of the previous year, the decrease is even -7.3%. In contrast to the declining development of the sow population over several years, the most recent May 23 census shows a reduction in the rate of decline with around 1.37 million animals or -2% compared to November 22. The reason for this is the above-average increase in piglet prices. In the individual weight categories of pigs intended for fattening, however, the number of animals continues to decrease. The fattening pigs in the upper weight range found at the beginning of May 23 are currently e.g. T. already slaughtered. The developments in the numbers for young pigs and piglets are of interest for estimating the future number of pigs for slaughter .A decline in the number of young fattening pigs of around -5% was determined. These animals will be ready for slaughter in the coming months. The number of piglets decreased by -6.25% at the census date May-23 compared to Nov.-22. Compared to the previous year, the decline is even -11.7%. This development will be noticeable in the range of slaughter pigs from September 2023.
