Mars increases yield prognoses for maize in the EU with regional differences The agrometeorological institute of the EU (MARS) has increased the yields for maize and other summer cereals compared to earlier prognoses in its latest Sep.21 publication. The basis is provided by climate data that is closely related to the area yield. Years of experience form the background. Compared to 2020, this year's EU corn yields are expected to be 6.5% higher than in the previous year. Compared to the 5-year average, however, the EU hectare yield is only to be estimated slightly higher. However, there are differences in the individual EU cultivation regions. Strikingly high growth rates are expected for France. In a 5-year comparison, estimates an increase of + 14%; compared to the weak previous year, an increase of + 24%. France is the largest EU producing area. In Belgium and the Netherlands the numbers are not quite as dramatic.Romania is experiencing an increase of + 41% compared to the catastrophic previous year, but is only + 2.1% above the multi-year average. The figures are similar for Bulgaria (+21% compared to the previous year). For Germany , an increase in earnings of 7.2% (compared to the 5-year average) and 4.6% (compared to 2020) is expected. Significant yield reductions of up to -25% are forecast for Hungary, Slovenia, Slovakia, Lithuania and Italy. The reason for this is the high temperatures this summer with too little rainfall.
