(AMI) - In the first half of this year, 2.6% less meat was produced in Germany from commercial slaughtering than one year earlier. In the first half of the year, this corresponds to a total production of 3.93 million t of meat. Pork is by far the largest contributor, accounting for two-thirds of the volume produced, followed by poultry and beef. Significant declines were recorded primarily in pork. This is essentially due to the significantly reduced number of pigs. At the same time, however, the numbers of battles went back a little more clearly, the overall slightly larger slaughter weights compensated for the loss at least to a small extent. In the slaughter of cattle slaughter also decreased. Due to the sometimes much higher slaughter weights, however, the amount of beef produced increased slightly. In addition, just the number of slaughtered female categories decreased significantly, with the young bulls even moderately more meat was produced. Poultry meat production ranks second only to pork, accounting for one-fifth of the total. This year, the number of poultry meat produced has fallen somewhat, but this is due not least to the continued decline in chicken stock. Compared to pork, in the longer term, both poultry meat production and consumption have increased significantly.
ZMP Live Expert Opinion
The decline in meat production is likely to continue in the coming months. As the livestock surveys show, it is unlikely that more animals for slaughter will be available in the coming months. At the same time, domestic demand for meat is steadily declining, but exports are providing impetus.
