(AMI) - France's potato marketers started with large quantities in the 2017/18 season, but were largely able to provide contract goods. There is hardly a market for free goods and higher prices are not at all. France's potato processors started full steam in the new season. From July to August, they already absorbed 152,000 tonnes of raw material, 25,000 tonnes more than in the previous year. At that time, however, the Quantum remained rather small due to low early potato yields. Even in the further course of the process, however, the processors were not able to resort to an abundant raw material, and the processing volume 2016/17 fell somewhat behind the usual extent. In order to meet demand, more potatoes had to be bought from the free market and imported more. This season is different. One seems to be able to draw from the full. With 72% or 109,000 tonnes, as much goods from the contracting industry as last came to the factories as never before. On the other hand, domestic consumption of less than 5,000 tons was less than ever before. The whole was supplemented by 38,000 tonnes of imports, some of which are also under contract in Belgium.The data now submitted to France is probably a reflection of the situation of potato processing within the EU as a whole. Everywhere it is said that the contract cover of the raw material requirement has grown more and more in recent years and this season should be very high in the early part of the year.
