Quality problems are increasingly affecting the market

Kartoffeln Cockpit, 26.10.2018

  • Best festkoschende dining potatoes are at 40, - € / dt
  • Potato products are in greater demand by consumers in Germany
  • Bintje potato barely deductible on the market
  • Quality problems push the prices
  • Termiminals reflect the pressure of the market

Apparently, the factories are overwhelmed with the preparation of these problem areas. In order to be able to serve the good demand for potato products, it is preferable to process raw material from supply contracts. On the open market, there is hardly any offer of decent potatoes in addition to the unsuccessful and barely tenable games. The prices for such Bintje are under pressure anyway. In the harvest season they have dropped from 25 euros to 20, 18 today to 15 euros / dt. With increasing effort for reprocessing, prices could fall further. And so processors still have time to purchase other devices such as salt baths. They will endeavor to refine even this raw material somehow to high-quality potato products. Other varieties, and especially those that are less problematic, currently cost between € 25 and € 28.50 / dt in Belgium. However, Bintje almost never meet the reference qualities such as 360 g UWG and 60% in the 50 mm + caliber. Similar prices apply in France, with the exception that Problem-Bintje in France is not rejected so brusquely and is still paid at 19 to 20 € / dt. But quality problems also affect the price. The price range is even wider in France than elsewhere in Europe. There are courses from 15 to 30 € / dt called. For best festkochende dining potatoes, these are even at 40 € / dt. But as long as there are still so many problems in Europe, prices remain under pressure. Of course, that also reflects the quotations. Some of these are also used to calculate the potato index of the Leipzig futures exchange EEX. Traders on the stock exchange have long since reacted, the November 19 futures contract was last traded at 25 € / dt. At the end of August, a closing price of € 28 / dt was still applicable. The reason for this is the calculation method of the stock exchange. It uses common cash market quotations for frits from four countries in Europe. Two of them, namely those from France and Belgium, are mainly Bintje quotations. In Belgium, this is further qualified by the FIWAP / PCA listing, which also includes other varieties in its price report. The other half of the Belgian index share is the said Belgapom quotation, which today slipped to 15 € / dt. France reports a pure Bintje listing. This explains the fall in the stock market, not only on the front month November-18. The April 19 date has fallen below the € 29 mark for the first time since 9 August. After all, no one knows how well the potatoes will last and how long games on the market are under pressure. Since it is mostly Bintje that are shunned by the buyers, one will still hear about the problems for a long time. The stock market would be well advised to find a way to dispense with the bintje quotations or to include them less in the index. For the time being, however, the players on the futures exchange have to come to terms with how the index is calculated. A spontaneous change of the formula is not possible. However, since the Bintje loses importance in the cash market for years, such a step should now be taken so that it can come to fruition for the April 21 appointment. After all, the popularity of potato products has continued to increase in Germany as well. 13.9 kg are consumed per capita per year. The AMI calculated this last week on the basis of statistics from the Federal Statistics Office. It is a new record. The products are partly imported from abroad, with Holland, Belgium and France playing a big role for us. Since potatoes are an important staple food, but with extreme price fluctuations, it is important for us to be able to secure prices on the futures exchange.

Despite the still too dry soils, the potato harvest in Western Europe comes to a close next week. In Belgium, the quality of the varieties is hardly taken into account. The harvest there is 1.5 million tons smaller than in the previous year and processing raw material is extremely scarce. In addition to the already much-described problems with glassy tubers and low sub-water weights now come to serious damage due to dry Rodeverhältnisse added. This leads to a supply pressure before protect the factories with defense prices. Bintje is currently hardly sold in Belgium and the Belgapom quotation for it sinks today to 15 € / dt.
