Concerns about dwindling yields are growing for processing potatoes. The drought and the prospect of continued lack of precipitation in the coming week could have a significant impact on earnings prospects. Market participants are already talking about inventory arrears that cannot be recovered. Without irrigation, the drought problem will be exacerbated again. While the early varieties showed good yields, the main crop seems to be at least partially in danger and full yields are hardly expected. Another problem at the moment is the high sorting rate and the resulting deductions. Bruising in particular seems to be a problem at the moment. The stock market reacted to the development, so that the listings in the weekly balance sheet have increased again. When it comes to tubers, the supply of supra-regional potatoes in the food retail sector continued to decline. The quantities are still sufficient to meet demand. Prices were weaker and dropped by up to 4 euros/dt. after.
ZMP Live Expert Opinion
At the potato market, market participants are looking forward to the weather forecast for the coming days. If nothing changes in the precipitation deficit, yield losses seem inevitable. This, in turn, could also affect prices. Accordingly, it remains to be seen whether there will still be major harvest pressure on the market in the coming weeks.
