The courses on the futures exchange EEX in Leipzig are clearly pointing north today. Potatoes were already being traded today at a peak of 27.50 euros/dt. The dry conditions and high temperatures are slowing down the growth of potatoes and driving prices up accordingly. Rainfall is still only very sporadically in sight, but could occur more extensively in the next week. In Lower Saxony, the Farmers' Association of Northeast Lower Saxony reports that many producers have already used up their water quotas for irrigation. Despite high irrigation costs, the sprinkler systems have often been in use. It is positively reported that there is hardly any disease pressure in the field crops. Trial tilling by the PCA/Fiwap in Belgium shows average yields (across all varieties) of 35.4 tons/ha. Against the background of the dry vegetation period, growers are quite satisfied with these values, but the average yield per hectare here is 37 t/ha. At the food market, many varieties are already ripening naturally. Demand is still calm, the warm temperatures and the wave of travel are blamed for this.
ZMP Live Expert Opinion
Heat and drought continue to worry growers. The prospects for the coming week appear somewhat better. However, the plants have so far lacked rain on too many days. Despite the larger acreage in Central Europe, the harvest is unlikely to be all that plentiful. There will probably not be a cheap potato season from a price perspective.
