According to the latest information from the International Grain Council (IGC), the global rapeseed area in 2020/21 with 35.5 million hectares is likely to be around 3% larger than in the current marketing year and thus even slightly above the five-year average. Space is expected to increase in the EU-28, Russia and China. In Germany and France in particular, rapeseed acreage could increase by 7.4% to 5.9 million ha after the sharp decline in 2019/20, although it still remains well below the five-year average. According to the Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft mbH (AMI), unfavorable sowing weather in the north and east of the EU affected the cultivation of the fields. In Russia, the IGC expects an area expansion due to the worldwide increasing demand of 6.3% to 1.7 million ha, in China 6.8 million ha of rapeseed should be cultivated in the future (+1.2%). The IGC sees an unchanged acreage of 8.5 million hectares for Canada for the 2020 harvest.Due to the uncertain export demand for Canadian rapeseed, especially from China, which stopped importing rapeseed due to political disagreements in 2019, and high stocks, many farmers are likely to decide not to expand the area. In contrast, the rapeseed area in Ukraine is expected to decline by 7.1% to 1.2 million hectares. Winter rapeseed has already been completed on 1.1 million hectares, the remaining areas should be ordered in spring. Due to the continuing drought, the Ukrainian fields are in a suboptimal condition.
