The food market is still relatively calm. Due to the mild temperatures, storage pressure and germ-friendliness are currently increasing, especially in area storage facilities. The listings are largely stable compared to the last listing week in 2022. At the beginning of January, too, peeling companies are mainly concentrating on the processing of contract goods. On the other hand, the participants in the market for processing potatoes are more optimistic. Listings have recently increased almost everywhere and the factories have picked up full speed again with their processing at the start of 2023. While buyers from the Benelux region have been looking for free goods again since mid-December, observers in Germany expect a demand impulse to come by mid-January at the latest. Currently, the demand for free quantities in Germany is still rather subdued, since the factories can use their capacities with contract goods and excess quantities from contract cultivation. In France, there are currently also high processing volumes, and firmer prices and demand impulses are also expected here in the coming weeks.Potato contracts got off to a solid start in the new year on the EEX , but had to move away from the EUR 29 per quintal mark again. As of today, Friday, there has been no trading on the EEX so far. Buyers in the April 23 date have positioned themselves at EUR 28.80, the sellers are more numerous at EUR 29/dt.
ZMP Live Expert Opinion
The food market has changed little at the beginning of the year and there are currently no signs of impetus. However, the small harvest supports the price structure. For the same reason, the processing potatoes are also at a high price level. Demand is likely to increase further in the near future and various statistics show that consumers' appetite for frozen products has not yet diminished despite high food and energy prices.
