While there is little demand for processing potatoes from German factories, buyers from the Benelux region are currently very receptive and are also looking for free quantities in Germany to supplement their contract quantities. Short delivery dates are mainly in demand, because the vast majority of factories in Belgium and the Netherlands also run on sight and plan their production capacities at short intervals. Prices for fried potatoes are rising due to the emerging firmer demand. The Reka is raising its prices for Fontante and Challenger from 23.50 euros to 24.50 euros/dt. In Belgium, the Innovator variety is quoted at 27 euros/dt, while Fontane and Challenger are still quoted at 22.50 euros/dt. But here, too, Belgapom notes that demand has recently increased more than supply. Prices in France also increased significantly. Here too, shortly before the end of the year, there was much more lively trade in potatoes, with factories looking for additional quantities on the open market. Between the public holidays, however, the assembly lines are mostly at a standstill here, so that trading is not likely to resume until after the turn of the year.Sales of ware potatoes are as expected. The market participants are mostly satisfied with the Christmas business. The quotations no longer change during the Christmas week. The prices on the EEX move only slightly and have changed little since the start of trading today. The EEX index for processing potatoes rose to 25.20 euros/dt this week due to higher prices.
ZMP Live Expert Opinion
The potato market is starting the new year stronger. The demand for food is at a good level, but does not bring any lasting impetus. The factories in Belgium and the Netherlands are starting out and are increasingly looking for free quantities, which also supports prices in this country.
